The Adventures of Ferdinand Count Fathom Chapter 20

In which the wary Ferdinand Count Fathom, harbouring suspicions against his fellow-traveller, resolves to escape the treachery he perceives by departing abruptly and riding through the night to a solitary village, only to find his most valued treasures replaced by a parcel of rusty nails. Forced into a desperate journey through a dark and stormy forest, he at length discovers shelter in a remote cottage, where he is admitted by a seemingly honest old woman, and contemplates the uncertain path that lies before him.
