🤖 The Agentic Cure for Healthcare's Ailments

The United States healthcare system faces a multifaceted crisis characterized by "increasing costs of care, staff burnout and shortages, and the growing disease burden of an aging population." Agentic Artificial Intelligence (AI), defined by its autonomy, goal-orientation, and ability to orchestrate complex workflows, offers a powerful "therapeutic paradigm" to address these systemic failures. Unlike traditional or generative AI, agentic AI functions as a proactive digital teammate capable of transforming healthcare across administrative, clinical, pharmaceutical, and patient care domains.This report highlights the tremendous potential benefits, including an estimated $200-360 billion in annual savings from administrative efficiencies alone. However, it also emphasizes the significant ethical, regulatory, and operational challenges that must be carefully navigated. Responsible innovation, guided by principles such as those outlined in the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) AI Code of Conduct, is crucial for realizing the promise of agentic AI while mitigating its perils.
