The Aging Fleet of Italian Automobiles

Recent findings from the ACI and Fondazione Caracciolo indicate that approximately one-quarter of all passenger cars currently on Italian roads are at least twenty years old. Out of the roughly 40.2 million active vehicles, about 10 million fall into this aged category, with nearly 4 million of those exceeding three decades of use. It is important to distinguish these aging machines from true collector items, as the vast majority are simply outdated daily drivers rather than preserved classics. While legislation automatically classifies cars over thirty years old as historic, only a small fraction of younger vehicles are officially recognized for their mechanical or aesthetic significance. When including commercial transport alongside private automobiles, the total number of these elderly vehicles climbing toward 16 million units across Italy.
