It was two nights before Thanksgiving, just past midnight, on a stretch of Highway 22 that cuts through nothing but pine trees and the occasional abandoned gas station. I got off the bus in a town called Lowry because the driver said he needed to refuel and the stop would be forty minutes. I had never heard of Lowry. I walked across the empty parking lot to the only light still on—a bowling alley called Lucky Lanes.
