The All-Night Laundromat on Route 31

It's the dead of summer, around 2 AM, and I'm on a Greyhound cutting through central Kansas. The bus pulls over at a tiny town called Elkhart, population maybe 600, so the driver can smoke. There's a laundromat across the street, its fluorescent lights buzzing through the dusty windows. I step off for air and end up inside, where a woman in a faded blue dress is folding the same load of laundry over and over. She doesn't look up, but she starts talking. She tells me about the night her daughter disappeared from this very parking lot, how the bus never stops here for the passengers, how the driver always knows. She says her daughter got on a bus like this one and never called. And then she turns to me, and I see her eyes are the color of old milk. I want to leave, but the bus is still idling. The driver honks once. I don't go back.
