The Almanac Maker | The True Story of Benjamin Banneker, Told for a Calm Night

Benjamin Banneker was a free Black man, born on a tobacco farm above the Patapsco in colonial Maryland, who taught himself astronomy by lying out under the stars, and this is his true story, told slowly and gently so you can fall asleep inside it. As a young man he carved a working clock entirely out of wood, by hand, after studying a borrowed pocket watch, and it kept time for the rest of his life. In his fifties he borrowed books and instruments from a Quaker neighbor, sat up night after night at a worktable by one candle, and taught himself to predict eclipses. He helped survey the boundaries of the new federal capital on the Potomac, worked out the tables for a series of published almanacs, and sent the first of them to Thomas Jefferson with a long, courteous, unanswerable letter on the equality of all men. He lived out his quiet years on the farm where he was born, walking the fields, playing the violin, keeping the sky, and he died there past seventy, honored and at peace.
