The Amazon Was Never Empty: What LiDAR Found Beneath the Trees

Beneath the Amazon canopy, LiDAR just mapped hundreds of previously undocumented geometric earthworks — and the numbers force a rethink of pre-Columbian Amazonia.A 2026 Nature study surveyed 4,497 km² in southwestern Brazil and documented 432 earthworks (396 of them new). Extrapolating across the broader Aquiry cultural landscape (~183,000 km²), researchers estimate 24,000–30,000 earthworks may exist, with a modeled peak population of 1.25–3 million people around AD 100–300.These were not dense “lost cities.” Most appear to have been ceremonial and political gathering centers linked by roads, set within a managed forest landscape of longhouses, crops, and useful trees.
