The Anchor Point of Every Love – 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year A)

Jesus’ words can sound confronting: “Anyone who prefers father or mother to me is not worthy of me.” Is Christ asking us to love our families less? In this homily, Fr Michael explores why the answer is exactly the opposite. Using the image of mountain climbers and an oxygen mask on an aeroplane, he explains why placing God first is not a rejection of our loved ones, but the only way to love them well. Drawing on the story of the Shunammite woman from the First Reading, this reflection invites us to rediscover our deepest purpose: we are made for God, and only when He becomes the anchor of our lives do all our other relationships find their proper place.
