The Antiquary Volume I - Chapter Fifth
from The Walter Scott Library Hosted by Sir Walter Scott
In which the Antiquary’s hopes of discovering the ambitions of a reserved young stranger at Fairport are confounded by the latter’s sober and solitary habits, leading him to extend an invitation to an antiquarian acquaintance of complicated loyalties and gentle eccentricities. The visit of the elderly messenger to Knockwinnock Castle reveals the delicate balance of friendship and discord between two learned gentlemen, mediated by the diplomacy of a sensible young lady who charms both their flaws.
