The Apostles Arrested and Freed (Acts 5:12-42)

Gabriel WongDate: 29th June 2025Passage: Acts 5:12-42Summary:Sharing the good news of Jesus is tricky because we fear the consequences it will bring. We may not have the same threat of persecution as the early church, but we can still face rejection and opposition at times. This week’s passage of Acts 5:12-42 is a perfect example of how we can have boldness as we share good news in the face of opposition. Using four principles, the apostles model for us what it means to obey God and not man. (v.29) Firstly, they carried a clean conscience. While this doesn’t mean that we have to be perfect, we want our actions to witness to God the same way the apostles did. (v.12-16) It can be more difficult to share God’s goodness to others if our behavior as His followers tells a different story. Secondly, the apostles had a firm understanding of how God is in control. It was never a fair fight for the religious rulers, as God would have used every attempt against Him and the apostles for His good. (v.17-21; Gen. 50:20) In the same way, we can rest knowing that whatever happens, God has allowed it to be so. Thirdly, the good news has to be shared. Gamaliel had an understanding of how the gospel would not be stopped. (v.34-39) In the same way, we must understand that the message of Jesus Christ will not be stopped until every knee bows and every tongue confesses that He is Lord. (Phil. 2:9-11)  Lastly, even if we do encounter rejection or opposition in our sharing of Him, we can rejoice as we partake in His suffering. Though the apostles were beaten and flogged for preaching the gospel, they left “rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for [Jesus’] name.” (v.41)  Now, church, the question is not how will we do it, but will we do it. Will you remain silent and obey the fear of man, or obey God and speak Jesus?
