The Apostles' Creed: The Holy Spirit

from Oklahoma City First Church Sermons & Devotionals · host First Church OKC

Apostles' Creed I believe in the Holy Spirit. As we've examined the Apostles' Creed so far, we've looked at our beliefs about the Father and the Son. Both of those sections of the Creed are clear in their pronouncements of Christian belief about the Father and the Son. But the Creed seems far less clear regarding what we believe about the Holy Spirit.  One line, "I believe in the Holy Spirit."  That's it.  No statement about the work and role of the Holy Spirit.  Nothing about the ordinary and extraordinary work of the Holy Spirit.  But as we study the Creed more I think possibly most of the last section is about the Holy Spirit.  The the Creed turns directly from the Holy Spirit to the Church and no doubt the two are directly related theologically. This Sunday at First Church we will be examining both the ordinary and extraordinary work of the Holy Spirit.  The ordinary work of the Holy Spirit seems quite common:  awakening us to the reality of God, convicting us of sin, calling us to a life of love, prayer, repentance, and holiness.  But the extraordinary work of the Holy Spirit seems astounding and sometimes bizarre:  speaking in tongues, healing, visions, prophecy, and words of knowledge.  Both the ordinary and extraordinary works of the Holy Spirit are necessary for us to gain a full picture of the work and ministry of the Holy Spirit.
