(Gen. 3:6) The Garden of Eden was a fruit orchard, as the area was filled with fruit trees rather than vegetables. Adam and Eve were surrounded by a wide variety of fruit for their eating pleasure, for it is written: And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. (Gen. 2:9) All the trees of the garden were beautiful to look at, delicious to taste, and sufficient to sustain life. This was the food of immortals. But there was “one tree” that they were told not to partake of–unless it was for a special purpose. It was written of that tree: “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it; for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” (Gen. 2:17) This means that if they ate of it, they would no longer remain immortal but would become mortal and eventually die. The purpose of eating from that tree was not just to bring death. For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. (Gen. 3:5)
