As reported by the Mail on Sunday, Old Bailey judge John Samuels QC twice allowed Nicolle John to walk free, later chaired the Parole Board panel that approved her release, and went on to develop a close personal relationship with her after retiring from the bench. The judge says his actions were driven by a passionate belief in rehabilitation. Nicolle John says the relationship crossed a line, lacked boundaries, and left her emotionally and financially dependent on a man who had once held power over her liberty. Nicolle John would later receive a 99-year IPP sentence, a form of punishment now widely condemned and ruled unlawful, spending more than a decade in prison under a broken system.
