Route 17, late October, a motel with flickering vacancy signs and a room that costs forty-two dollars a night. Luna checks in after her car dies near the Tennessee line, and the clerk hands her a key to Room 8 without meeting her eyes. She sleeps badly—wakes to find the armoire door open when she knows she closed it, a faint smell of cedar and something else, something metallic.
