The Armor of God (Part 2)

Instead, I was number 158. And so were several thousand more young men in October of 1942. As thousands of numbers were stirred up with a spoon during World War II, number 158 was the first number to be drawn. Later, as they checked my height, weight, eyesight, and teeth to see if I was fit to serve my country, it seemed like my life was about to drastically change. I had just turned 21 a few months before and, for as long as I could remember, I worked on our family farm in Georgia. I didn't know anything about weapons, fighting, or the military. Ever since I was ten, I had always wanted to be a writer, and I had spent as much time as I could reading books and dreaming up stories. Now I was doing my best to try to see the good side of being in the military. Maybe it would help me write, I kept thinking as I rode on a bus headed to basic training. Basic training was going to prepare me for battle. I was going to learn who my enemy was and how to use my armor and my weapons.
