The Arrival Fallacy — Getting There Won't Fix You
from The Daily Podcast with Jonathan Doyle
You think you'll be happy when you arrive. I've arrived at a few places — let me save you the trip.Psychologist Tal Ben-Shahar named it the arrival fallacy: the belief that reaching the goal — the number, the title, the finish line — will deliver lasting fulfilment. It doesn't, and the mechanism is hedonic adaptation: the brain resets to baseline and quietly nominates a new summit. The leather seats become the heated leather seats. The house becomes the bigger house. In this episode: why the research shows money stops moving the happiness needle past a point, why this isn't an argument for nihilism or lowered ambition, and the real answer — relocating the payoff from the destination into the process, the daily craft, the person you're becoming. It's the oldest finding in the book: Aristotle's eudaimonia said the becoming was always the point, and the wisdom literature reported back from the summit three thousand years ago.Grab my book Bridging the Gap free as an audiobook — search "Bridging the Gap Jonathan Doyle" on any podcast app.Corporate speaking and executive coaching enquiries: jonathandoyle.coA new one every morning.
