from FilmRise True Crime · host FilmRise True Crime
A mother of four young children, a pillar of her Mormon community, a woman who seemed to have it all. She poisoned her youngest son with arsenic, watched him die in agony, and then claimed he had a rare disease. She was almost never caught.Melissa Gilbert was a mother from West Valley City, Utah, who was convicted of killing her 15-year-old son James by lacing his tea with arsenic . She had been researching how to purchase the poison online. An unsolved death of a husband of one of her friends and her father-in-law were also investigated for potential poisoning. The case was featured in the first episode of The New Detectives, titled Bad Chemistry, which aired on June 10, 1996 . The episode examined how forensic toxicologists detected arsenic in James's body after his mother insisted he had died of a seizure disorder. A follow-up investigation revealed that Gilbert had been physically and emotionally abusing her children for years, and that James was the only one who had the courage to threaten to expose her. In December 2022, Gilbert was sentenced to life in prison, the mandatory penalty for murder in Utah, with the judge calling her treatment of James "some of the most cruel and vicious acts that have ever been before me" . Turn down the lights, put on your headphones, and press play because the perfect mother was poisoning her own son.
