THE ASSASSINATION OF MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.

Episode 204 | Historical Events — Mysterious EventsIn this Mystery episode we focus on the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. — the official conviction of James Earl Ray, the physical evidence questions that have never been fully resolved, and the 1999 civil trial in which a Memphis jury found that a conspiracy involving government agencies was responsible for King's death. A verdict almost no one remembers. We trace the documented FBI campaign against King — illegal wiretaps, infiltration, the 1964 letter urging him to commit suicide — and why the King family came to believe Ray was a scapegoat. We examine Loyd Jowers's 1993 television confession, the four-week civil trial, and the DOJ's 2000 rejection of the jury's conclusion. And we cover the 2025 declassification of thousands of previously withheld FBI documents — which added detail about the surveillance campaign without resolving the central question. The case is officially closed. James Earl Ray pleaded guilty, recanted three days later, and died in prison. The King family has never accepted the official account. The question of what the FBI knew and did remains genuinely open. This podcast features narration with a synthetic AI voice.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/history-mystery/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
