The Atheist Experience 29.14 with Justin and Jim Barrows

from The Atheist Experience · host The Atheist Community of Austin

In today’s episode of the Atheist Experience, Jim Barrows and Justin, go to the Red Sea to find dead soldiers, but all they found was the linen cloth that was removed in Mark 14. Steve in NE, has found research detailing how wind and water displacement would have created a land bridge in the Red Sea allowing the Israelites to cross. How much sense does it make sense for there to be 2.5 million people wandering around in that desert for 40 years where there are no graves or bodies found? There are no dead soldiers in the Red Sea, and this is a seven day walk on the map. How do you explain the incongruencies between the story in Exodus and historical records kept by contemporary cultures? Art in PA says that matter is not what we experience and the cause of our sensations are unknown. How does this fit in with your idea of god? The call then turns back to Exodus and questions are raised of how the tricks were conducted such as killing all the fish or turning water to blood.  How could there be more water turned to blood if all the water was turned to blood and how is it possible for the plague of frogs to have lived in blood?Steve is a youth pastor in NY that is asking for help as he deconstructs a less toxic form of Christianity. Deconstruction is a process and everyone’s process is different. It can be helpful to look at the data. Think of the laws of Moses that are horrible, regardless of when they were written and whether they were temporary. Why do we accept that god gave commands for people to own slaves? If you take the Bible literally, you end up with problems with resolving the conflicting stories in the Bible. The Clergy Project is a good place to find help and this would be a good time to dialogue with people who are currently deconstructing.Craig in FL, has a question about Mark 14 and how it is creepy that the linen cloth was torn off the boy. There are two schools of thought on this: one is metaphorical, and the other is where the boy was well known to run around naked and was an eyewitness to Jesus. Christians, you can’t make this story go away!Jim in MO has some comments about Biblical prophecy fulfillment and uses the Spiderman example of how the story of the 70s was a prophecy that was later fulfilled in the story of the 90s. Anyone could just write that Jesus did these things to just fulfill the prophecy. Why did he not know certain things about the Greek words in the scriptures? If Jesus ever existed, he was a liar and a fraud. Anthony in AZ asks if death is just a chemical reaction, specifically, murder. Everything in the universe is a chemical and physical reaction. The moral argument for god does not fit Ockham's Razor, and you have to assume god first. How do you explain moral behavior for non-human species? The way dialogue works by the way is questions followed by answers.Michael in GA has some questions about Genesis 3 and knowing good and evil. Their sin did not make them mortal, they were already mortal and the Tree of Life was needed to keep them alive. “Spiritually dead” needs to be defined and then you will see it fall apart. God has a body and wears clothes!Thank you for tuning in this week! We will catch you next time in the world of theists and atheists.Believe in God?
