The Atoning Servant - Isaiah 53:4-6
from Faithful to the End Hosted by Graceway Church of Michiana
Isaiah continues this prophecy of the unnamed, suffering servant in Isaiah 53. This third stanza of the 4th Servant Song is the climactic center of the Hebrew poem. It speaks to the atoning, substitutionary place that the servant takes for the people. He takes their suffering, he takes their grief, both of which are caused by sin. As we understand through the coming, life, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus - he is the fulfillment of this servant song in Isaiah. Jesus paid the price for sins on the cross, Jesus died for sins. This truth should shape the way we think and live as believers. Jesus suffered and died for our sins, taking the consequences and just penalty that we deserved. Celebrating the Lord’s Table together as a body of believers affirms our personal testimony of salvation and draws us together in unity around the sacrifice of Jesus. As a church, we strive to exalt him in our gathering and interactions together. Communion reminds us of our reasons for gathering every week – it’s Jesus and his sacrifice for our sins.
