The Attendant at the Rest Stop Near Marfa

A woman stops at a rest area on Highway 90 outside Marfa, Texas, late in October of 2015. The place is nearly empty — just a vending machine, a map kiosk, and a young man in a high-vis vest who offers to fill her tires with air. He is polite, too polite, and his eyes never leave the tree line. Over the next twenty minutes, she learns he has been working this shift for nine years, that no one else ever applies, and that the rest stop was closed twice by the state but somehow kept reopening. He tells her about the things that cross the highway after midnight — not cars — and about the old woman who leaves bottles of water in the trash bins. By the time she drives away, she understands why the vending machine hums a half-step out of tune, and why the lights in the bathroom flicker in a pattern that almost spells words.
