It was June of 2017, just after midnight, when my sister called to say she'd found something in the attic of her new house on Poplar Lane. She said it was a door — a small one, child-sized, set into the wall where no door should be. I drove over expecting a crawl space or a forgotten storage nook. What I found was a frame with a porcelain knob that turned freely, and a draft from the other side that smelled like wet earth and old flowers.
