The Aztec Flower Wars: Rituals of Sacrifice

In this episode, we explore the Flower Wars (xochiyaoyotl), a series of ritualized conflicts between Tenochtitlan and its rivals like Tlaxcala. Unlike conquest wars aimed at land, these battles sought captives for sacrifice to sustain Huitzilopochtli. We examine how the tlatoani Moctezuma I orchestrated these engagements to feed the Templo Mayor, the psychological warfare involved, and how they strained alliances leading to the Spanish arrival. Through accounts in the Florentine Codex and Bernal Díaz del Castillo, we reconstruct the grim reality of these staged battles, the role of the eagle and jaguar warriors, and the complex political calculus that turned sport into survival. #xochiyaoyotl #FlowerWars #Tenochtitlan #MoctezumaI #Huitzilopochtli #TemploMayor #Tlaxcala #Aztecs #Mesoamerica #FlorentineCodex #BernalDiaz #EagleWarriors #JaguarWarriors #RitualSacrifice #AztecEmpire #Nahuatl #History #FexingoHistory #AncientMexico Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
