A Drop in the Gray began forming in 1982, led by Danny Phillips a native of San Francisco who relocated to Los Angeles. Phillips recruited other band members including Scottish guitarist Colin Campbell, whose influences included the Clash and Fleetwood Mac. Their performance was compared to The Fixx and was described as "tight and polished".[2][8] In 1984, A drop in the Gray recorded their first album, Certain Sculptures, for Geffen Records.[8] Harry Rishakoff, a former member of The Dickies, joined A Drop In The Gray and later joined Concrete Blonde.[1][3] Geffen Records dropped the group in 1986. They were unable to find another label and became defunct.
