Percy, Annabeth, Grover, and Tyson find that the labyrinth is something none of them could have prepared for. Their journey through this perilous maze leads them to encounters with the oldest of mythical monsters and to the strangest of places, including a chance encounter with Nico, who is still looking for a soul who has escaped death. Even with Percy getting brief glimpses into Daedalus' life, they are no closer to finding the great inventor than they are to finding a way to navigate the labyrinth safely. All the while, Luke is still looking for Ariadne's string, one of the few things apart from Daedalus himself that would allow him to safely transport the Titan army to Camp Half Blood.
