The Beanie Baby Problem
from The Anne Levine Show
Collecting looks like a harmless quirk until you watch how fast it can turn into a chase. One person brings home a souvenir, a toy, a fuzzy “mystery box” character, or a vintage find, and suddenly everyone wants one. The shift often happens at the exact moment scarcity enters the story: “They are sold out” or “They are not making those anymore.” Behavioral economics calls this the scarcity effect, and it can bypass our calm reasoning before it even shows up. But there is MUCH more to it than that.
