The Beautiful and Damned by F. Scott Fitzgerald | Jazz Age Romance, Wealth & Tragedy Audiobook Part 1

from The Audiobook Vault: Catholic Sacred & Classic Voices from the Past · host The Audiobook Vault: Catholic

⭐ Catholic Review: 3.5/5 F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Beautiful and Damned, published in 1922, follows Anthony Patch and Gloria Gilbert as they pursue romance, luxury, parties, and an anticipated inheritance. What begins as glamorous young love gradually becomes a portrait of idleness, alcoholism, selfishness, financial irresponsibility, and wasted potential. The Mark Nelson LibriVox recording runs about 14 hours and 15 minutes in total. From a Catholic perspective, the novel has considerable moral value as a cautionary tale. Fitzgerald shows how wealth without purpose, pleasure without discipline, and beauty without virtue can ultimately become destructive. Anthony and Gloria repeatedly choose immediate gratification over responsibility, while their fixation on money and social status leaves them spiritually and emotionally empty. The major reservations are the novel's alcohol abuse, sexual immorality, infidelity, materialism, and cynical attitudes toward marriage and morality. It is not a Christian novel, but its depiction of lives ruined by excess can nevertheless provoke serious reflection on temperance, responsibility, fidelity, work, and the proper place of wealth. Catholic verdict: ⭐⭐⭐½ — A powerful but morally dark American classic. Best appreciated as a penetrating warning about what happens when pleasure replaces purpose and wealth replaces virtue.
