The Beautiful Risk of Staying Open
from Infinite Threads: Conversations on Love, Connection, and Compassion · host Bob
Welcome back to Infinite Threads. I’m your host Bob.This week, we’ve been walking through some difficult ground. Not hopeless ground.Just honest ground. We began with the courage love sometimes requires. Then we talked about mercy beyond revenge, and how real love can stop harm without making punishment the whole shape of justice. We sat with the places love still hurts, because anything that matters deeply can leave tender places behind. Yesterday, we thought about what love refuses to become when the world rewards hardness. So today, as we finish the week, I want to talk about staying open. That may sound simple. It isn’t.Anyone can talk about being open when life is gentle. It is much harder after disappointment. Harder after grief. Harder after someone has taken our trust and handled it carelessly. The heart learns from what happens to it.Sometimes it learns beauty. Sometimes it learns caution. Sometimes it learns to brace before anyone has even done anything wrong. And honestly, I understand that. There are reasons people close down.Sometimes closing down feels like survival. If you have been hurt enough, openness can feel almost foolish. The world may tell you to toughen up. Your own memory may tell you not to let anything reach that deep again. Fear can make a convincing case, especially when it brings evidence from the past.It says, “Remember what happened last time.”And we do remember. That is the problem. We remember the ache. We remember the betrayal. We remember the loss. We remember the times we cared and it cost us more than we thought we could afford. So when love comes near again, even in a gentle form, something in us may hesitate. Not because we do not want love.Because we know love opens a door. And once a door is open, life can enter.Joy can enter.Connection can enter. But so can uncertainty. That is the risk.To stay open is to admit we can still be touched. It is to admit we are not finished needing. It is to admit that, even after all we have carried, our hearts are still alive enough to respond. That is beautiful. It is also frightening.I don’t want to pretend otherwise. There is a cheap kind of optimism that tells people to open their hearts as if nothing has happened to them. I don’t believe in that. Love does not ask us to erase our history so we can become easier for other people to deal with.Real openness is not amnesia. It remembers. It has scars. It may move more slowly than it used to.It may check the floor before taking the next step. That does not make it weak.A heart that has been hurt and still chooses not to become a locked room is carrying a courage the world rarely notices. We should notice it.Because staying open does not mean letting everyone in.That is important.Openness without wisdom can become self-abandonment. It can become a way of handing the keys to people who have not learned how to enter gently.Love does not require that.Boundaries matter.Discernment matters.Safety matters.Sometimes love keeps the door closed to one person so the whole house can heal. But a boundary is not the same as a wall around the entire soul.A boundary says, “This is where care can remain honest.”A wall says, “Nothing gets through.”And if nothing gets through, pain may be kept out for a while, but so is tenderness. So is joy. So is the unexpected kindness we did not know we needed. So is the person who might have become part of our healing if fear had not answered the door first. That is the difficult balance. We need wisdom. But we also need room.Room for trust to grow slowly.Room for friendship to surprise us.Room for laughter to come back after a season when it felt far away.Room for love to take a new shape in us.I think staying open often begins very small. Not with a grand vow.Not with standing in the middle of life and declaring, “I am healed now,” while dramatic music plays and everyone claps. Most of the time, it begins quietly. We answer the message. We accept the invitation. We tell the truth a little more honestly than we planned. We let someone help.We allow one small joy to matter without apologizing for it.That may not sound dramatic, but it can be.Especially when closing down has become a habit. There are days when hope itself feels like a risk. Not because hope is foolish, but because hope means the story is not over. And if the story is not over, then we may have to participate in it again. We may have to care.We may have to become available. We may have to let love disturb the numb places. That can be uncomfortable.Numbness has its own strange comfort. It lowers expectations. It asks very little. It protects us from surprise by convincing us surprise is no longer possible. But numbness is not peace.Peace has life in it.Peace can breathe.Peace can sit beside sorrow without turning into stone. That is what love wants for us.Not a life without ache.A life that still has room for light. And maybe that is why staying open matters so much.It keeps the thread moving. When we close completely, the thread stops at our fear. Love may still be near, but it cannot move freely through a heart that has decided survival means never being touched again.I say that gently. No one should be shamed for closing down after pain.Sometimes the first mercy is simply surviving. But if love is patient, and I believe it is, then it will keep inviting us toward life. Not all at once. Not by force.Just one small opening at a time.A conversation that feels safe.A memory that hurts but also blesses.A kindness that reaches us before we can deflect it.A moment when we realize the heart has not died; it has only been protecting itself. That realization can be tender.Maybe even holy.Because beneath all our defenses, there is still something in us made for connection. We can deny it for a while. We can distract ourselves. We can call it weakness. But the need to love and be loved keeps returning, because it belongs to who we are. That is what this whole week has been circling.Love becomes courage.Love moves beyond revenge.Love honors the places that still hurt.Love refuses to become cruelty. And now love asks us not to close the door on everything still possible. That is not an easy request. But it is a merciful one.Because the future cannot reach a heart that has become permanently sealed. The people who might love us cannot enter if we have mistaken isolation for wisdom. The joy that wants to return needs at least a crack of light to come through. So maybe staying open is not about being unguarded.Maybe it is about being willing.Willing to heal at the pace healing comes.Willing to let trust be rebuilt instead of demanding it appear fully formed.Willing to believe that our past pain tells the truth about what happened, but not the whole truth about what can still happen. That distinction matters. What happened to us matters. What can still happen also matters.Love asks us to hold both. Not by pretending.By staying alive to possibility. There may still be friendships we have not met. There may still be laughter that catches us off guard. There may still be forgiveness that comes slowly, not because someone demanded it, but because our own soul is ready to set down a weight. There may still be beauty that finds us on an ordinary afternoon and reminds us that the world, for all its sorrow, has not forgotten how to shine.I don’t know what staying open looks like for you today.Maybe it means letting someone care about you.Maybe it means telling the truth about how tired you are.Maybe it means stepping back from bitterness before bitterness becomes your permanent address.Maybe it means risking a small yes after a long season of no.Whatever it is, I hope you approach it gently. The heart does not heal by being bullied into openness. It heals through safety, patience, honesty, and love that proves itself over time. But when the moment comes, when you feel that small invitation toward life again, I hope you recognize it.Not as pressure. As possibility.A crack in the wall.A light under the door. The thread, still waiting in your hands.Because staying open is a risk. There is no way to make love completely safe. But there is also no way to make a closed heart fully alive. And I think, even after all the ache, even after all the disappointment, even after all the reasons we have learned to protect ourselves, love is still worth letting in.Carefully.Wisely.Honestly.But yes.Still yes.Because love has not finished with us.The thread is still moving. And somewhere ahead, there may be more tenderness, more healing, more laughter, and more life than fear has allowed us to imagine. That is the beautiful risk. Not that we pretend nothing can hurt us.But that we refuse to let hurt be the only thing that shapes us.We stay open, not because it is easy.Because love is still real. And because some part of us, beneath the fear and the scars, still knows we were made for connection.I’m Bob Barnett, and this is Infinite Threads.Infinite Threads is a reader-supported publication.
