The Bennington Triangle — Where the Forest Keeps Its Secrets
The Bennington Triangle is a loosely defined region around Glastenbury Mountain in southwestern Vermont, associated with several mysterious disappearances between 1945 and 1950. The area was once home to logging camps and small settlements, but the forest eventually reclaimed much of the land, leaving behind abandoned foundations, isolated trails, and a growing reputation for strange events. The most famous cases include experienced guide Middie Rivers, who vanished during a hunting trip; college student Paula Jean Welden, who disappeared while hiking the Long Trail; veteran James Tedford, who never completed a routine bus journey; eight-year-old Paul Jepson, whose trail reportedly ended near a road; and hiker Frieda Langer, whose body was discovered months later in an area that had already been searched. Natural explanations include harsh weather, difficult terrain, poor visibility, and the limitations of search methods at the time. Other theories suggest criminal activity, voluntary disappearance, or unrelated accidents later grouped together under one legend.
