The betrothal contract between the parents of the bride and future groom is a marriage contract and when the price is paid and the bride is acquired and marital relations are then allowed.There are two parts to an Orthodox Jewish marriage.The first part is the betrothal contract (shitrei erusin) and is a private encounter where the shitrei erusin is agreed upon and signed which gives the couple all martial privileges.The second part is the kiddushin and is a public ceremony where the ketubah is signed and there's a feast in the home of the bride.The shitrei erusin lays out what the bride will bring to the marriage and her family is compensated for their loss of income because of the loss of their daughter.The ketubah lays out the groom's responsibility to the bride and is witnessed by the whole community and finalized the marriage publicly.it was believed that without the intervention of the Holy Spirit a woman could not become pregnant on her first sexual encounter or without her first menses. When Mary became pregnant so soon after their consumating their marriage, Joseph questioned if Mary had an affair and if the child was his. The angel assured him that the child was his and told Joseph to take Mary, his wife, because the child was conceive of the Holy Spirit which Joseph understood to mean GOD intervened to allow her to become pregnant by him with GOD's help.
