The Big 12 Conference is Now SUING Texas Tech Over Brendan Sorsby

The Big 12 Conference has escalated the ongoing controversy surrounding Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby by filing a federal lawsuit in Dallas on June 14, 2026. The action targets Texas Tech University, its leadership, and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, seeking a declaratory judgment that the conference maintains independent authority to enforce its own bylaws regarding athletic integrity. The legal battle stems from Sorsby’s admitted gambling violations, which included placing over $90,000 in wagers—some on his own team while at Indiana. Although a Lubbock County judge recently granted Sorsby a temporary injunction against the NCAA, allowing him to play after a two-game suspension, the Big 12 argues that this ruling does not supersede the conference's internal governance. The conference maintains that playing an ineligible athlete threatens the integrity of its competitions and risks significant reputational and financial harm. The situation turned adversarial when Attorney General Paxton sent a letter to the Big 12 threatening over $200 million in liability if the conference attempted to sanction Texas Tech. In response, the Big 12’s 47-page complaint argues that Texas Tech previously affirmed the conference’s power to discipline members during the 2017 Baylor University scandal. The suit seeks an injunction to prevent Paxton and Texas Tech officials from interfering with the Big 12’s right to sanction the school, which could include fines or a ban from the Big 12 Championship. As other institutions and even non-conference opponents express outrage, the Big 12 is attempting to bypass state-level political pressure by utilizing federal courts. The conference has not yet formally voted on sanctions, noting that the "legal uncertainty" created by Paxton's threats has necessitated this preemptive strike to ensure they can uphold their standards before the season begins in September.
