The Bind That Unties

from Proverbs Daily Podcast · host Fred Lynch

Proverbs 6:21: “Keep them ever folded in your heart, and have them hanging round your neck.” Today’s Episode: The Bind That Unties You’ve heard of “the tie that binds.” Today, I want to talk about the bind that unties. And since it’s National Coaches Day, let’s give a nod to the coach whose voice you can still hear when nobody’s standing on the sideline. “Keep your head up.” “Follow through.” “Finish!” Eventually, good coaching gets inside you. You carry the instruction into the next play. Proverbs 6:21 gives us that picture. A parent is telling a child to keep the family’s wise instruction close. The surrounding passage warns against adultery. Before desire carries you somewhere destructive, carry wisdom with you. Several translations say to bind these teachings to your heart. The Bible in Basic English puts it beautifully: “Keep them ever folded in your heart.” Folded. Like a letter you keep because somebody who loves you wrote something you need to remember. You unfold it. Read it again. Fold it back in. Then life presses you, and you reach for it again. Rehearsed wisdom becomes available wisdom. The early Christian writer Lactantius connected religion with binding ourselves to God. That’s one proposed word origin, not the only one. But I love the picture: a sacred commitment that gives your life something trustworthy to hold onto. Because we’re already bound to things. Somebody’s insult can tie up your whole afternoon. Bitterness can keep you attached to a person you swear you’re finished with. A distraction can have you checking your phone before you even know what you picked it up for. So what happens when you bind yourself to patience? When forgiveness becomes something you practice? When truth gets folded into your heart deeply enough to interrupt your excuses? A different tie begins to loosen. You can hear a hard word without handing somebody your whole day. You can feel the pull of an old habit and still choose another step. That’s the bind that unties.
