The Bizarre Medical Treatments of Ancient Egypt

In April eighteen eighty-nine, papyri recovered from the ancient Egyptian settlement of Lahun included a worn and repaired medical manuscript from the Middle Kingdom, dating roughly from eighteen fifty to seventeen hundred before the common era. Its instructions concern women’s pain, fertility, conception, pregnancy-related symptoms, fumigation, oils, massage, and substances whose names can still be difficult to translate. This episode follows that fragile document into the wider world of ancient Egyptian healing.Through the Lahun, Edwin Smith, Ebers, Hearst, and other medical papyri, we encounter a tradition that joined careful observation with remedies and religious words that can seem very strange today. There are womb-centered diagnoses, crocodile dung in a damaged conception-prevention passage, grain testing for pregnancy, honey on wounds, catfish skull material for headaches, and donkey tooth mixed with honey for hair. Yet there are also systematic trauma examinations, bandages, sutures, prognosis, rest, and practical attention to pain and injury.The surviving manuscripts do not tell us whether most patients recovered. They preserve intentions more often than outcomes.
