The Blue Blanket Motel – June 1987

Luna tells the story of a summer job gone wrong at the Blue Blanket Motel outside Elko, Nevada, in June of 1987. The motel was barely a dot on the map, twenty rooms in a horseshoe around a cracked parking lot. She worked the night shift for three weeks, cleaning rooms and checking in the occasional trucker. Then the woman in Room 9 started leaving notes under the door. Not on paper—on the inside of the lampshades, on the back of the TV cabinet, in the medicine cabinet mirror with a finger. Luna never saw her check in. She never saw her leave. But every night, a new message appeared, written in a substance that smelled faintly of copper and rust. The last note she found said, 'You don't have to stay.' She didn't.
