It confirms a suspicion we've always carried but rarely said aloud: knowing things and doing things were never actually the same skill, no matter how badly we wanted them to be.For the last decade, the entire AI industry built its house on the bet that they were. Feed a machine enough words — every encyclopedia, every court transcript, every forum argument about the correct way to load a dishwasher — and eventually, the thinking went, something like understanding would condense out of all that language, the way dew condenses out of humid air. Understanding of grammar. Understanding of argument. And, eventually, understanding of tables, doorknobs, gravity, and the particular fragility of ceramic.It hasn't worked. Not because the machines aren't smart — they demonstrably are, in the narrow sense of being extraordinary at manipulating symbols — but because knowing the word for a thing and knowing the thing turn out to be governed by completely different systems.
