The Brain Group: Enneagram Meets Neuroscience with Jack Killen, David Daniels & Laura Baker
from International Enneagram Association Podcast
In this episode of the International Enneagram Association podcast, we listen to the first part of a discussion with Laura Baker, Jack Killen and the late-David Daniels as they talk about The Brain Group – a collaboration with Laura, Jack, David, Denise Daniels and Dan Siegel – and the model they’ve developed called Patterns of Developmental Processing. The human brain and the mind operate in the world by looking and seeing for patterns, making assumptions based on those patterns, and then motivating actions on that basis. These five researchers bring their own perspective to discuss how the Enneagram might develop over someone’s lifespan and the connections between the nine early temperaments that align perfectly with the nine Enneagram types. They also explore some of the challenges they saw in the development of their model.Connect with us:Web: internationalenneagram.orgIEA Enneagram Experience 2025: ieaexperience.comJoin the email list: [email protected] Baker:Web: dornsife.usc.edu/laurabakerphdLinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/laura-baker-8531788Jack Killen:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jack-killen-m-d-5686792b/Dan Siegel:Web: drdansiegel.comWeb: mindsightinstitute.comFacebook: Dr. Dan SiegelDenise Daniels:Web: drdaviddaniels.comDavid Daniels:Web: drdaviddaniels.comBook: Personality and Wholeness in Therapy: Integrating 9 Patterns of Developmental Pathways in Clinical Practice by Daniel J. What this episode covers
David Daniels, Laura Baker, and Jack Killingsworth explain how their five-year collaboration moved Enneagram teachings into peer-reviewed psychology—and why measuring type requires looking past trait models to core motivations. They present their latest paper on how innate emotion systems, attention patterns, and adaptive strategies shape type expression across a lifetime.
