On March 24, 1984, 5 teens met for detention. They were supposed to spend the day in silence, writing essays about who they were for the Vice Principal. Instead, they discovered who they were, and more importantly, why they were there. A rich father who doesn’t care what his daughter does. A suicide attempt with a flare gun. A pulled fire alarm in a call for help. Volunteering because they were bored with life. And taping someone’s ass together because his father told him to, and he couldn’t stand up to his dad. John Hughes put together something that had its funny moments, but it was more of an eye opening reality into 80’s teen life, and how school was a brutal look into the world they were going to face soon.
