The Bridegroom and the Broken Bride

In this sermon, Fr. Elijah explores the powerful encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4). At first glance, the story appears to be a simple conversation between two strangers. But when we look deeper through the lens of the Church Fathers, we discover that this encounter reveals the story of every human soul. Jesus comes as the Bridegroom seeking His bride. The Samaritan woman represents every person who has searched for satisfaction in the wrong wells of life—success, pleasure, relationships, approval, and achievement. Yet every one of these wells leaves us thirsty. Through this beautiful Gospel passage, we learn that Christ exposes our brokenness not to shame us, but to heal us. The Samaritan woman’s encounter with Jesus transforms her from a broken outcast into one of the first evangelists in the Gospel of John.
