The Brisbane Fraud Matter
from Detectives on the Air · host OTR.FM Network
Originally Aired: May 26, 1953Johnny Dollar #164, "The Brisbane Fraud Matter,"Johnny Dollar arrives in Detroit to investigate Hugh Brisbane, a broker who has mysteriously vanished, leaving behind a twenty-five thousand dollar bond that Johnny's company will have to cover if Brisbane has truly run away. Working alongside Sergeant Pantella of the Detroit Police, Johnny learns that Brisbane's disappearance is particularly puzzling. The man's office records are being impounded by the district attorney, and Brisbane hasn't been seen since Tuesday morning when he left home, ostensibly for work, but never arrived at his office. At the Brisbane home, Johnny and Pantella interview the missing man's wife, a well-kept woman who seems genuinely baffled by her husband's absence. She explains that she didn't report him missing for two days because she was out late on consecutive evenings and assumed he was sleeping. Mrs. Brisbane insists her husband had no enemies and describes an unusual marriage where business was never discussed at home. Brisbane would sometimes disappear from his office for days at a time to read and write in a private third-floor room, making his current absence seem less immediately alarming to those around him.
