The Broken Years That Built You

Gen X is old enough now to look back at the broken years — the ones that felt, while you were in them, like they would define you in the worst possible way. They look different from here. Not because the suffering was less real, but because you can see (at least partially) what the furnace was producing: the compassion that couldn't have come without your own pain, the faith that held under pressure, the clarity about what actually matters. This episode is an invitation to look back with Job's lens.Job 23:10 is one of the most remarkable statements of faith in all of Scripture — spoken not from the safety of the other side, but from inside the test, when Job can't find God in any direction. He still says: He knows the way I take. When He has tested me, I will come forth as gold. The episode asks honestly about the broken years we've never fully made peace with, the ones we treat as detours rather than furnaces, and what it means to acknowledge the Refiner's work in them."But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold." (Job 23:10, NIV) Today's challenge: name one broken year in your life, write one thing it produced in you that you genuinely value (the real thing, not what you're supposed to say), and acknowledge the Refiner — thank God specifically for what came out of what was hard.
