You live in rural West Virginia because you appreciate the quiet, relatively private life away from it all. It’s basically as placid and tranquil a location as can be – until the day an apocalypse washes your home and everything around it like a flume ride to oblivion. The Buffalo Creek disaster was awful in the way God running his tongue across your neighbourhood would be awful. Also, his tongue is made out of coal slurry. This is a transformative kind of disaster, that turns people into corpses and villages into flotsam with almost no warning.
