The Bugle in the Dark
from The Sportsman's Light · host Patrick
Ask any elk hunter about the moment that hooked them, and they'll describe the same thing: standing in black timber before dawn when a bull bugles — that wild, ancient scream rolling down the mountain. Everything in you comes alive. You didn't just hear a sound. You were summoned.Jesus said His people know His voice the same way: My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. Not a vague feeling. A voice — speaking through His Word, through His Spirit, through that unmistakable pull toward truth that cuts through all the noise of the world like a bugle through timber. The question is whether you're in the woods to hear it. A man who never opens the Word, never gets quiet, never listens, will go seasons without hearing the summons — not because the Shepherd went silent, but because the man stayed in the truck. Get where you can hear. He is calling, He knows you by name, and everything in you was made to come alive at the sound.Prayer:Lord Jesus, You are still speaking — and I confess the noise of my life often drowns You out. Tune my ears to Your voice.Call me the way a bugle calls a hunter deeper into the timber: away from comfort, toward You. I want to know Your voice and follow. Amen.Challenge:Get somewhere you can hear this week: thirty minutes, alone, with only a Bible — no phone. Read John 10:1-30 slowly and ask, 'Lord, what are You saying to me right now?' Write down what comes.
