It's the Building Years Podcast with Justin Alexio, Jeremiah Watkins. New episodes every Wednesday. Welcome to the show. Welcome to the Building Years.
Everybody, this is Jeremiah Watkins. How are you doing today? Hey, how's it going, Jeremiah? I'm good, man.
This is Justin Alexio. You're co-pilot on this mission. You're a co-pilot. You're a better pilot.
I have this thing. Whatever you want to phrase it. If this plane crashes, I'll be the benzoyl Washington flight that takes over the controls and you just kind of be my little assistant boy. Hey, man.
Everybody needs an assistant boy, so I guess I'll fill that role. God. You have a good weak man? You know, I guess.
That would not sound honest. You know. Oh, man. I watched the Oscars.
That was a... Me too, man. What did you think? I was crazy how much bird man slept.
I didn't think I slept that much. Have you seen bird man? Yeah, I did see bird man. Did you like it?
I did like bird man. But did you feel like it was worthy of all the hype that I got? I don't know. Because honestly, I think I'm too dumb to understand some of the metaphors they were doing because I didn't...
I was like, why is he randomly hallucinating? Didn't understand that part. And then it got explained to me afterwards. So what did the person say to you that explained it?
That it was this guy so egotistical he thinks he's a god in the theater, which I guess I kind of get. I thought... I don't know. I don't know what I thought.
I just couldn't understand that part. But what I mean, you know, it was a good movie. I don't want shit talkin' movie. It was good.
I like it. I thought, what's your name? Emma Watson? This is a girl?
The daughter? No, it's... Rick, why am I blank on her name? She's usually a redhead and this one she was not.
Whatever her name is. She was really good man. I thought the lead was good too. I'm blanking on Michael Keaton.
I was gonna say Michael Keaton. I was gonna say Michael Keaton. Michael Keaton. So, you know, it was good.
I thought, uh, Mac Snapper didn't get anything and then I saw Fox News going on a big rant about it which I thought was hilarious. Oh really? Emma Stone. Sorry.
I mean, if I'm critiquing, I did not find that to be a role that would seem super challenging as an actress compared to the other actresses that were up for Academy Awards. I was like, they're gonna see her and be like, I could play that role. Like the other women who were nominated? I don't know.
I just felt like it wasn't a super difficult role to prepare for. But who knows? I haven't acted in many movies. So, who knows?
Two or three more. One again, baby. Yeah. She's the queen of it.
And then, uh, Lady Gaga also, I felt like, killed it. Although I knew Lady Gaga was good. Good seeing that slow ballad stuff. Yeah.
I didn't know who it was that walked out. It took me like two minutes to figure out. It was that late. I've actually never seen, I've seen some of these at one time in high school.
She's considered like a legend, dude. That's why they went crazy when she walked out. Like what's she alleged for? Just that one movie?
Multiple musicals. Just in that time period. She's a British actress, I guess. Yeah.
Yeah, I didn't get that. I was like, why is everyone clapping like crazy? I had to ask somebody at the party and I'm like, Justin, stop talking. Oh, he were like, who is that?
And people were like freaking out on you and stuff. It was like, what? Yeah, Julie Andrews, man. Legend, supposedly.
I actually don't know a ton about Julie Andrews right now. But I mean, you know, she was in Shrek the third people. Hey, she was the queen in that. I'm looking at her IMB right now.
She's also, oh, she's the queen in all the Shrek's. The princess is Irish too. She played another queen. Down to the top gas singer.
She's very regal, everybody. What do you think about Sean's pen's racist joke? Dude, everyone is hoping arms about it. Actually, she's been in a ton of things.
She's a legend. Okay. Come on, man. I did not think that it was a big deal at all.
I thought that he was making a joke. The only reason why he's getting heat right now is because he made it. He's been in such a big hubbub about it years ago with the Jude Law thing. So if he wouldn't have said anything about Jude Law, then it wouldn't have been an issue.
It's just like, I was like, he's making a joke. And it's his friend. Yeah, are they friends? They're a really good friend.
That's why I made the joke. And it's fine, dude. And that guy obviously doesn't care. It's more about if that guy cares.
Yeah. Which I mean, it was really cool. Why do the cares win Oscars, baby? Dude, right?
It was really cool how they made Birdman look like one shot. That was really cool. Yeah. I was like, this is fascinating.
I made a video on how it was even possible. I was like, I don't, I edit and I don't understand how that made this look seamless. The color correcting. They like color correct things.
So exact from like transitioning with the cuts and stuff like that. That it's almost like transitions, but you're not seeing the transitions, but it's just like them going through whenever they're moving through different places and stuff. I think that's when the actual cuts were. Okay.
Yeah. Yeah. I was like, Dan, this is a long one shot when I was watching the videos. Oh, yeah.
It looked pretty awesome. I did. Have you seen Whiplash? I have not yet.
I'm going to see. It just came out to Red Box, baby. Oh, then I can see it. Yeah.
Before it was 15 bucks to rent. I got that kind of cash. Maya hasn't seen it. So I'll watch it again.
I like it that much. It was really, really good. I also saw Nightcrawler, which I thought Jake Gyllenhaal should have been nominated for his performance. That's what everyone says.
He's really good. So weird and creepy in that movie. It's a really good movie. Yeah.
I saw a Facebook post. You and Maya went on like a little late night binge. Yeah, dude. We saw Nightcrawler and Birdman.
We went to better on 4am. Nice. Nice. I was like, I'm actually sitting on Facebook like actor, friends, they're like, Miss The Oscars, it's okay.
I'll be up there in two years dreaming. And I'm like, come on. A lot of you are not going to go to the Oscars. Like the best a lot of you can hope for is to be on a shitty comedy.
And it gets canceled after, hopefully only two years. And I wanted to post that. I was like, people are gonna lose their vibes. I did not want to deal with that.
TJ Miller, he had some tweets and he is doing so much. He was in two of the nominated animated movies as voices. They sat him in the literally, he said literally the very back row and he's in two movies. So that's to put something in comparison for people who think that they're gonna be kind of the Oscars.
Yeah. It's a dress at home. You ain't going to Oscars. They're ridiculous.
But I mean that would be pretty cool. I was like, Oh man, if I had to present an award, I could do this. Like this would be so fun. I thought Jack Black stole the show.
Yeah. He was so good. He's funny man. Jack Black's money.
Did you think Neil Patrick Harris did a good job posting? He did a pretty good job. But like he he does a lot of like this. Just like this grin after he.
Yeah, that little though. That's like smirking. Like if they don't parody that on us and else like they got to. Come on.
You know, I mean he just like holds it for so long. Like come on, I can get a few more laughs of like if I keep smiling about how bad this joke is. Yeah, but he did a really good job. He's a really good host.
Yeah, baby. Yeah. So I had a lot of fun watching that and Eddie Murphy again came out and he's like, I don't approve anything. I'm just going to present this.
I'm not going to be funny. I'm going to be that level. Or you don't have to prove anymore that you're funny. You're just like, I'm the legend.
Shut up. Shut your mouth boy. Um, guys, it's almost March. St.
Patrick's days coming up. It's true. Isn't this year just speeding by? Oh, Justin.
Another year that's speeding by. Yes. I'm trying to increase my credit limit. I've been denied once.
They said I couldn't try. Amen. It's for six months. So I'm going to have to gamble and do the other card.
Same here dude. I have to try to extend my credit line because I'm about maxed out, baby. Oh, I was on your knife for the podcast. I paid nine, nine, I paid 900 interest last year on the credit cards and Justin said that that was like 20% and I'm like, well, look at it this way.
That's like paying an agent and a manager if you were booking stuff. Yeah, they're giving me money. I don't know how. Jesus Christ.
But, you know, we're supposed to be getting a bunch of auditions in March. We'll see. Yeah. Is that what the word is?
It's time to march. Might have lied. Justin. Yeah, hopefully.
I mean, that is the word. We'll see. Let's talk about lows and highs. Tell them about your avail for your commercial.
Guys, once again, I'll explain what an avail is real quick for those of you who do not know. An avail on commercial, basically, whenever you go to commercial edition, there's an audition, the first time they see you, which is a pretty big pool of actors, then they narrow it down to the call back. Let's do the numbers. They see over 100 people.
They say about 100 people, call back is 36 people. Okay. So it goes like 100 to 36, basically, right? Then if you get put on a veil, there's usually about three.
That's what I hear. Three to five. Usually three. Usually three.
So guys, since I booked that coffee bean commercial in the booth, it was August, I think. July or August? July, August. July, August.
Yeah. I have been put on avail the sixth time. Which is an insane amount of times. Yeah.
I mean, I'm glad that I'm being getting that close, but the people who are behind the actual product at the last minute are like, we don't want this guy representing a product. I think that's what's happening. So you were released. So yeah, so basically I didn't get it again.
I called Jeremiah and I was just like, trying to make it feel better. I was like, you know what? Ain't no making anyone feel better in this situation. It's just tough.
Like, I feel good that I'm getting like right there, but I'm like, you start questioning like, why am I getting right there, but I'm not getting it at this point? But maybe the way I'm looking at it, hopefully man, I'm establishing good relationships with these casting offices so they know, okay, this guy can perform if we call him in. And that's all I can really do. But this was rough.
The day after I was waiting on a phone call to hopefully say that I booked it or whatever, I still waiting on the phone call and I had a feeling that I wasn't going to get it. And the product was for Penske, which is like a trucking company. And what truck do I get stuck behind on the five and traffic? A Penske truck.
And then traffic light up and it drove away and I was like, I didn't get it. Wow, very meta. Dude, it was crazy. I was like, oh my goodness, this is insane.
I was like, sometimes man, God has a sick sense of humor. Yeah, man, that's real sick. Just the odds that I end up behind that in traffic while on a veil. But also too, I feel like when you're auditioning for stuff, you also noticed things that you normally wouldn't notice.
I probably wouldn't have even noticed I was stuck behind a Penske truck, but I happen to be auditioning for it. Yeah. Like whenever I auditioned for the one liner on Glee, this was like four years ago, I kept seeing billboards for Glee and I think it was just because I was noticing. You know what I mean?
It was like that kind of thing. Yeah, the guy was like, he like as soon as I did it, he's like, that was really funny. He started looking at my resume. He's like, where are you from?
I was like, oh, from Kansas. He's like, how long have you been out here? I'm like, oh, you know, a few months. He's like, oh, that's great.
You have a great look. Oh, you're not in Union. Oh, God. And I was like, yeah, he's like, okay, okay, that's not like a huge deal.
And I was like, my heart is sinking right now. And he's like, thanks so much for coming in. I really appreciate you coming in. And I know that they just gave it to a friend or something.
Yeah, they're like, all right, I'm not going to make that guy. Wait, how did you get that kind of audition a couple months here? I actually, sorry, if I'm actually going back into the bank, I've been out here a year or so. Because basically I had my first agent.
My got me my first agent because she was with a guy that she referred me to and he read me across the board for a little bit. Yeah. So I would have been here like a year. Cool.
Yeah. Didn't book it. Nope. Didn't book it.
Nope. But you know, that's why the highs are so high out here. Highs, because whenever it actually happens, it's insane. You know, I actually called the, there was a problem with my, I think on the LA casting account, which is the account for most commercials that the agents use.
And the lady was like, she's fixing the thing. And then she's like, wow, you go out a lot, like a lot, a lot. And I was like, I guess that's good. But on your commercial thing?
Yeah. She's like, throw my audition notices. That's cool. She's like, you got so much.
And I was like, yeah, it's okay though. It's kind of happened. It's going to happen. It's going to happen.
We're both going to book a $250,000 job and then we don't have to worry about this anymore. That'd be dope. Was it kind of cool seeing like Richard Link later and stuff on award shows when you're like, I just did a movie with that guy. It was cool.
It was also crazy. Like, I'm friends with some of those dudes, like the main characters on Facebook and they were posting on Saturday. They went to the pre-Oscar dinner. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. I was looking at all those photos. I was like, fuck, it's like right there, but it's not.
It's like there. You can see it, but it's so far away. Yeah. But honestly, I will say I wanted Rick, you know, boy, it didn't win, but it kind of is Rick is such a nice dude.
Like, when I'm ever super successful, I want to be like him because you could not tell and like the car he drove away from set was like very minimalistic. So yeah. You know, you could be nice in Hollywood. That's what I learned from him.
You got to be nice in Hollywood. You got to be. You never know. You never know.
Guys, you just be nice. Not for any don't just for not to advance or anything. Just be nice. Just be nice.
Did you get nice? But I had my improvised stamp show at the Comedy Store on Tuesday. How'd that go? Oh, me.
I was supposed to go that. I mean, Peter got caught up writing. Oh, nice. But, you know, now I kind of hate most of our ideas.
Oh, really? Well, no, I like them, but it's just like, you know, I think you can only write for an hour and then it's just like, what are we doing here? Oh, really? After an hour, it's just like whoops.
That's it. How was your show? It ended up being really good. So we had a transplant.
We had like a book. Oh, yeah, you had an emergency. Basically, I'm not going to drop names on this one. I had a lady screw us over at the previous venue that we were at.
She quit and didn't tell the owner that she had already booked us. So we're checking in a week before. Hey, just want to make sure everything's set up and good to go. Oh, I quit there.
What? Why did you quit? Oh, weeks ago. What are you talking about?
Oh, yeah, I don't work there anymore. Well, did you tell the owner that you booked us? Oh, no. We call the owner.
The owner is like, I'm really sorry. Like she didn't even like tell us. So there's a benefit that's booked. I can't book that.
Like I can't double book, basically. They've already paid and everything to run out the room. We don't usually pay for the room. So I had to call some favors into some buddies at the Comedy Store.
I was like, hey, can I do this before the Rose Battle at the Comedy Store? Same time, same date, which is nearly impossible. We were emailing theaters and all this stuff and ended up working out. The show went well.
There's a comic that you guys should look up. His name's Matt McCarthy. I had actually never seen him perform before, but he was referred to a guy who couldn't attend the show. And he crushed it.
He was a writer on the Pete Holmes Show. Super, super funny, but definitely check out his stuff. Moshe Keshor, annihilated for his entire set. And that was really fun to watch.
And then everybody else on the line up did really well. And it was a really fun show. And I'm thinking about moving it there permanently. I have to meet there with a new booker there later this week who books the rooms and stuff.
So we'll see if it's possible. But it might be happening. I say new home. It might be.
And you get some of that LA weekly heat. I don't know what it's going to take to get my show in LA weekly. I mean, I'd love for it too, but it's also been going on for over four years. It's like you think that it would have gotten something.
You think they know about you by now? They definitely know about us. They definitely know about us. That's.
Yeah. All right. Yeah. Well, just keep dreaming, Jeremiah.
Oh, yeah. That's my dream. No, it would be cool. That's a great publication.
Anyway, I think I can announce this. I don't know if I should. I'm going to wait a week actually to make sure everything's ironed out. All right.
We're just with it. It's something that could be good that's going on with Rose Battle for a certain thing. But we'll see. We've been meeting about it tonight to make sure it's solidified and everything.
But yeah, I'm excited about some stuff that's coming up for sure. I'm doing a comedy living room tonight. Looking forward to that. That's a good show.
Yeah, man. You know what my friend listens to this podcast and you said that we always spend a lot of time plugging our stuff. We don't know if it's good or bad. Oh, at the end?
Yeah, I guess that makes people know. But I guess if you're a repeat listener and you're like, I already know their Twitter and their website, stop saying it. All right. Then we can stop saying that.
No, my feelings are hurt. No, we sometimes because what happens at the end, we sometimes BS on other things and then like, yeah, if they're hearing that out your music and they're thinking the podcast is going to end soon and then we're just like talking about other stuff then. Yeah, whatever. Okay.
We'll try to ease up on the promotion. Sorry we're trying to get stuff going on. We do listen to you. You take suggestions.
I try and look at my shows for I come because Jeremiah's uncle yelled at me that one time. That's funny. That was good stuff. I went to a very interesting show on Friday night.
My friends birthday party at a show was going on there. It was a birthday party slash house show. And it was good. It was very different though.
They had a guy who did a set outside of the house. They gave him the mic through a window and he had to do his set outside of the house and he bombed for like five or six minutes. It says jokes. Wait, was everyone inside the house?
Yeah. Why did they have to do that? It was a very old show. They're just like, what was it called?
It was called something like the problematic box and then like, and then it's like, do your set outside. I can't. Just something like that. Because the crux of stand up is connected with the audience.
It was like, listen, I leaned over to somebody like, this is the worst live podcast ever. Because he was like, okay, he was saying, okay, this is not going well. Like, because he could hear that nothing like through the window that nothing was going on. Like he would get laughs on certain things.
I wouldn't want to do that. That'd be so hard. Yeah, that would suck. You can't connect with anybody.
Yeah. It's like them listening to your CD while you're performing it live, which is wow. Yeah. I don't know.
What a, dude, I've been to so many alt shows like that just that are like, I don't want to be part of this experiment. I don't want to bomb for your experiment. And it was a pack house too. I was like, oh man.
These people might be losing faith in this show. Did anyone else do good? Yeah. No, it was really good.
Like they had a, there's this a comic that I'd never seen before. I think his name is Sean Jordan. I friended him on Facebook afterwards because I like to set that much, which I rarely see comedians and I'm like, oh, let me, let me friend them a bit. Yeah, Sean Jordan.
I don't know how long he's been out here, but super funny guy. I really like to stuff. But he had a great set. And then Thomas Solvenski, he was one of the hosts and it was his birthday party.
He had a good set. And I hadn't seen him go up in a while. So that was really cool. Justin, I think you say his name.
Qusen, hopefully I'm not butchering that name. He, he hosted it in his place. And yeah, he's a good host. And they played like a sketch at the beginning.
It was like a super all-chill, but it was good. I hadn't been to an all-chill like that, an alternative show to, you know, the norm like that in a while. It was good. It was fun.
It was called Anne's show. Check it out if you want to see, we're playing other people's shows here. Look at us. Look at us.
We're doing it. We're doing it. Well, is it now that time? Let's get in there.
Let's get in there. Guys, I just found out I got an audition tomorrow. I don't make a tape. You have to make a tape?
Yeah. It's due by tomorrow at two o'clock. I hate making tapes, dude. Oh my goodness.
I feel like, I don't know. I almost feel like they don't go anywhere, but maybe they do. Maybe. But it's for Alvin and the Chipmunks floor.
So I guess that's... Heck yeah, dude. Make that tape. I have to make it.
You gotta make this one high quality if it's for Alvin. I gotta go to Argenta. Damn it. They're just 35 dollars.
Guys, that's why we have to open new credit cards all the time and stuff. It's because of stuff like this. We don't have 35 dollars, just laying around. I have zero dollars cash in my wallet right now.
Dude, I spent my last... What did I spend it on? It was something dumb too. I was like, oh, I can't believe I'm spending the rest of my cash on this.
Anyway. Guys, how dark you want us to get? I think they like it. They like the tarts I like to hear the struggle.
You know what I mean? No one wants to... You know, one last thing I did find out. I have a whenever I'm dating a new girl.
I have a no pod. You're not allowed to listen to my podcast. It's called the new podcast rule. You tell them that?
Yeah, I'm like, don't listen to podcast. I'm like, oh, yeah, it's just part of persona. You don't know what's true. What's not true.
Guys, he does not embellish that much. It's almost all 100% true for all you ladies out there listening to Justin right now. He drops names. Watch out.
If you have dated Justin in the past, you have appeared as a guest star on this podcast. That's very true. But my ex-girlfriend is like, yeah, I listened to it. I listened to all the ones that you recorded while you were dating me.
I was like, what's the... Yeah, I went back. And I was like, why don't you go back? She's like, because when we break up, I don't have to follow your rules no more.
And I was like, oh. Yeah. And I was really showing us by increasing our podcast audience. You win.
Thank you. Yeah. No, you're probably really nice. You're probably one of the girlfriends that I like that Justin had around.
I don't know which one he's talking about. And I'm not going to drop the name because I'm changing, guys. Changing. It's a new year, baby.
It's a new year, even though it's already March. Easy with that. Easy with the M word. But yeah, guys, it's my mom's birthday this week, so wish my mom happy birthday through social media.
Happy birthday, momma Watkins. When you're going to come back and make me no tacos. Dude, they might be coming back in June. Oh, that'd be sweet.
They want to go on a cruise though. I can't go on a cruise. I mean, that'd be cool, but I mean, who's paying? Well, they would have to.
They know that unless I just have like a life preserver that I could rent and then just like hold on to a rope along that that's what I can afford. That's where I'm at right now, guys. Well, that's good. What do you have coming up this week?
Guys, I got a show on Thursday up in the valley. So no one's going to go to it. I know you guys, but just know I have it and I'm doing successful. And then I got another show at the downtown independent.
So check that out. I'm not going to plug. When is that one? That one's Sunday, but it's like a I don't know who's.
I haven't heard of these people before. So who knows? It's not like the normal people that run the show there. Okay.
Yeah, I'm not going to plug my Twitter or website because you guys already know what it is. Yeah, see you taking in your recommendations. There you go, guys. And I'll be at comedy living room tonight as well as Rose Battle at the Comedy Store at midnight.
And then Wednesday, I'm on an awesome show. I'm opening for Wednesday the 25th. It's Dean Del Rey. It's his birthday bass show with Mark Marin, Bill Burr, Joe Rogan, Pete Holmes, Brian Redband, Argefear and some other special guests.
So it's going to be amazing. The Comedy Store, I mean, we can start it sold out. There's going to be over 300 people in there, so it's going to be amazing. I'm grateful and honored that Dean asked me to open that show.
So that we really... Don't bomb. Right? Dude, am I bomb in front of that?
No, for those all those really... Especially in front of all Comedy Store guys, I'm like, no. No. But it should be fun.
And then the rest of the week, yeah, I'll fill it out later in the week. Check out our social media stuff that you guys already know. And yeah, hit us up. Add the building.
Hit us up at the building here at gmail.com. We'd love to hear your email and any reviews. We always like to read and look forward to checking out. Thanks so much for listening to the podcast, guys.
We love you. What do you think the Walking Dead's people's dicks look like?
