In Hawaii, they all need an occupational license to practice their trade. Unfortunately, these mandatory licenses often do far more harm than good. Jessica Poitas, legislative counsel for the Institute for Justice — a public interest law firm based in Arlington, Virginia — explains why. Using data from the Institute for Justice’s new report, License to Work 3, Poitras argues that occupational licensing makes it harder for people to work in a given profession, which limits options and raises prices for consumers.
