from The Wheel of Sport

Post war Britain was a bleak landscape. Devastated by war, the country was in the process of rebuilding its infrastructure and institutions. One symbol of this period was the youthful and energetic Manchester United team being meticulously rebuilt by Matt Busby. Such was the freshness and optimism around this team, they became know as 'The Busby Babes'. However, their progress was dealt a tragic blow during the Munich Air Disaster on February 6th, 1958.
