The Butcher of Bilbao Story

from La Liga Lowdown

One of the most shocking stories in the history of Spanish football is the Butcher of Bilbao story. This was the nickname that was given to Athletic Club defender Andoni Goikoetxea, who broke Diego Maradona's leg, snapping it like a piece of wood as the Argentine would later describe it. This wasn't the only incident to this story, though. As Román de Arquer (@Aeroslavee) explains in this podcast, there was a brewing rivalry between Athletic Club and Barcelona at that time. Paco Polit (@pacopolitENG) then details the many incidents that took place in matches between these teams between 1981 and 1984. In part two of this podcast, Matt Clark (@MattClark_08) explains what happened to Maradona next and Dan Parry (@DanParry_) reflects on Goikoetxea's legacy. And it's all hosted by Euan McTear (@emctear). Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
