The Katherine Massey Book Club hosts the 13th study session on Catherine Pelonero's 2017 publication, Absolute Madness: A True Story of a Serial Killer, Race, and a City Divided. This was scheduled to be our concluding study session on this text. However, Gus. T. and listeners have emphasized the widespread sexual abuse in the Buffalo Catholic church. Low and behold, Father Michael R. Freeman has several substantiated claims of child rape. In fact, even during the time that Father Freeman met Joey and testified at his murder trial, Freeman was allegedly raping children - sometimes at gun point. The Buffalo diocese was aware of Freeman's child molestation and assisted him in evading law enforcement. These crimes were widely publicized in 2018 and are extremely relevant to this book. There's flagrant anti-sex/homosexual activity and sexual deviance throughout the text - including prostitution and wide age differentials between partners. The widespread rape and concealment exposes the lie (rhetorical ethic) of kindly, pious Whites who are devoted to their faith and humanitarian objectives. Last week, Pelonero provided vivid details of Joey's childhood influences. His father Nicholas was known as an "extreme Racist." He found a "kindred spirit" with a fellow neighborhood Racist, and the treacherous tandem vandalized public parks to intimidate black visitors. Stunningly, Pelonero spoke with neighbors who remembered Nicholas terrorizing black pedestrians by firing a pellet gun and shouting Racist slurs when black people approached the area. Demonstrating the adage that the fruit doesn't fall far from the tree: Joey attacked countless black people and was convicted of killing multiple black males, and his father is a known "extreme Racist." However, Therese Christopher is presented as a kindly, weeping, Catholic mother who earned the sympathy of all.
