The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the third study session on James B. Stewart's Blind Eye: The Terrifying Story of a Doctor Who Got Away with Murder. Stewart is an awarding journalist, attorney, and celebrated true crime author. He nabbed a Pulitzer Prize for his work on "insider trading" and stock market malfeasance during the 1980's. Stewart also hoisted an Edgar Award for his 1999 book investigating the charming but deadly Michael Swango. This White serial killer is caged at a Colorado supermax penitentiary and is suspected of having killed approximately 60 people - although no one truly knows how many lives Swango extinguished. Last week, we learned that many of Swango's medical school classmates were highly suspicious of him - including some who felt Swango should have been removed from school. However, this charming White fella had some students and faculty vigorously rally to his defense. Swango was was also aided by Ohio State University's abject failure to peek at any of the documents that Southern Illinois University compiled about his serious misconduct. After black female patient Rena Cooper nearly died after having suspicious contact with Swango, OSU conducted a clandestine investigation without contacting the police. Cooper believed the blond White doctor injected a poisonous solution into her IV. White hospital officials dismissed Cooper and her roommate's allegations as bogus, and Swango faced no disciplinary or criminal consequences.
