from The C.O.W.S.

The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts Session 4 on The Memoirs of Robert & Mabel Williams: African American Freedom, Armed Resistance, & International Solidarity. Moving forward from last week's analysis of his early military environment, we continue digging directly into the primary-source reality of Chapter 22. Recap & Deconstruction of Military Incarceration & Surveillance: Last week, we were struck by Williams' strategic request to obtain his own Military Intelligence Records, uncovering the vast, extensive surveillance grid white power state actors deployed against him for years. We interrogated Williams’ visceral commentary during his time in the stockade military prison, where he documented that captured German Nazi POWs were granted superior treatment, diet, and freedoms compared to Black American troops. Upon a thorough counter-racist investigation, we deconstructed the psychological warfare of this environment, noting how Black troops pathologically internalized Nazi POWs leaving behind a few loose cigarettes as proof of their German "friends." We apply counter-racist logic to show how the system engineered this stark caste contrast to humiliate Black soldiers and maintain White Domination even within military confinement. The California Disillusionment & Broken Promises: Furthermore, we investigate Robert's detailed accounts of his sincere optimism and hopes for structural advancement when he was shipped to California. Williams expected to finally secure a pathway to journalism training and professional elevation within the Marines. Instead, he was abruptly and systematically stripped of all promotional opportunities. We break down the Racist malice of these military gatekeepers, analyzing how the White power structure intentionally dangled progress to extract Black labor, only to enforce a rigid racial ceiling to prevent non-white autonomy and literacy.
