The Call to Repentance
from St Mark Sermons Hosted by St Mark Coptic Orthodox Church
This sermon, inspired by the Gospel of Luke and the call of Levi (Matthew), explores the transformative power of Jesus' call to repentance and contrasts it with the judgmental attitudes of the Pharisees. Fr Pishoy examines three key figures in the passage: Jesus, who sees the hidden potential in sinners and offers gentle grace; Levi, who responds immediately by leaving his old life behind and creating a safe space to introduce his friends to Christ; and the scribes and Pharisees, who sit back and criticize out of self-righteousness. The sermon challenges us to reflect on our own lives and attitudes: Are we trapped in an endless, meaningless cycle of daily work? Are we acting like the critical, uptight Pharisees who push people away from the church with judgment, or are we embodying the gentle, loving heart of Christ? Fr Pishoy emphasizes that true religion is not about rigid rules and anger, but about grace, hospitality, and opening our homes and hearts to those who feel unchurched or unworthy. Ultimately, the message is a call to action and a personal invitation to repentance—a gentle U-turn back to God. We are urged to recognize own spiritual sickness, acknowledge own need for the divine Physician, and take Jesus' hand with the prayer, 'Lead me.' By acquiring the heart of Christ, Christians can become beacons of love, joy, and true transformation in a critical world.
